Article from the UK magazine OK:

Yasmine Bleeth:
Opening her weddingalbum exclusively for OK! The Baywatch star talks about her fairy tale wedding and reveals why husband Paul is the one...

Yasmine Bleeth brougt elegance and beaty to baywatch in the heady days of the now cult drame about a group of lifeguards.her exotic frensh morrocan looks set pulses racing and catapultet her to world wide fame alongside her colleagues Pamela Anderson and Carmen Electra. As one of Baywatch’s leading ladies, Yasmine appearde on magazine cover after magazin cover. When she finally decided to hang up the famous red swimming costume in 1997, Yasmine was immediately snapped up by the former Miami Vice star Don Johnson to star in an other worldwide favorite, Nash Bridges.
On two walls of her study at home, her smiling face and easy goodlooks jump out of every cover photo.
Around the house, beatiful photos of her family and friends share pride of place with the newest additions to the collection, her weddingphotos!
On august 25 last year, a beaming Yasmine wore a classic white gown made of duchesse satin for her marriage to interpreneur Paul Cerrito. The Santa Barbara wedding, set against the pounding surf to the pacific, was a fairy tale ending for a woman who had spent the last past jears in batteling cocaine addiction...
It was Paul‘s love and support that had given her the courage to fight and win her battle with cocaine, so the wedding day was given an added sense of poignacy for Yasmine and Paul.
The couples beatiful wedding symbolised an end to all of Yasmine’s recent troubles, and it was clear, that she had never been happier before.
Here, exclusively in OK, Yasmine opens her photo album to give you an initimat elook at her fairy tal ewedding, and tells us all about her special day...

OK: Yasmine, tell us about your husband Paul.

Yasmine: We actually met in rehab and i really knew I was in love when I continued to want to see him afterwards! In rehab, evryone gets quite close but you don’t know what’s real and what’s not. At that point I neither wanted nor felt I would be capable of having another longterm relationship in my live, and I wa resigned to that fact. Ironycally Paul wasn’t looking for a relationship either, but if it’s ment to be, it’s ment to be. And it is!

OK: How did Paul propose?

Yasmine: He proposed in Michigan, which is wher ehe comes from. He had gone to visit his mother and seemed to be gone for a very, very long time. He finally rang me up and told me he had something very important to talk with me about. It sounded ominous and I was convinced he was going to break up with me. But after what seemed like an interminable silence he was kneeling in front of me, asking me to be his wife. He then proceeded to present me with two velvet boxes, one of which contained his grandmother’s ring and the other his mother’s. e hadn’t chosen a ring for me at that point and just wanted me to have a symbol to represent our engagement- and wanted me to have the ring i like the best. He later designed the engagement ring that I’m wearing, and the wedding band.

OK: You’ve had more than your fair share of troubles. Is this your happy ending?

Yasmine:Paul is a very special person- he is the one. I am totally in love with him and he has made my obstacles feel a lot lighter. When you want to keep a special person in your live you will do anything you need to make things right. I couldn’t wait to be a married woman and it’s now six month later and I still loving it all.“

OK: Tell us about your beatiful duchesse satin dress...

Yasmine: It was designed by UllaMaija in satin and featured a sweetheart neckline and hand drapped bodice. The waiste line was accented by a silk chiffron sash, noted to one side. I had a chapel length trail and a silk chiffron veil and felt like a princess. I’m very romantic and wanted something traditional.

OK: And of course the ring...

Yasmine:Paul designed the platinum band set with square cut diamonds. He is a man of great taste. Our rings are beatiful. On the day i also wore my grandmother’s antique pearl bracelet.

OK: Why did you chose Santa Barbara as location for your wedding?

Yasmine: We love the ocean and wanted to capture it in our wedding. Santa Barbara is such a beatiful spot and we had our hearts set on an oceaside wedding. The resort is exquisite and it allowed us to have a beatiful wedding and honeymoon in the height of the summer. There is also a spa, so we also enjoyed some pampering as well.

OK: Can you give us some details about the wedding itself?

Yasmine: We wanted our wedding to reflect all the elements of who we are. We wanted us to be elegant and still have twists of all the other things we love, like elvis and ‚50s diners, our love of classic rock and the Pacific ocean. I could hear the ocean during the ceremony, which was perfect.
Our wedding featured a stunning array of tropical flowers including my faforites, orchids.
We wanted it to be intimate and fun and I think we achived all those things. It was wonderful from start to finish. It started with the wedding party the night before and ended with the after wedding reception, an 11 piece Latin band and an R&B quartet. Paul’s mother surprised us with fireworks after dinner which was nothing short of magnificent.

OK: What was the music for your first dance?

Yasmine: We danced to the Etta James song At Last . It summed up our sentiments to each other entirely.

OK: What is the significance of the number 17, which was featured on your invitation and the cake?

Yasmine: We’d been dating for about two weeks when Paul leaned over and told me he loved me. I replied:‘oh yeah? How much do you love me?‘ He said 17. I asked him what that ment and he said it has just popped into his head. I let it go, thinking it was just something random but since that day 17 has somehow featured in our lives. It’s our lucky number and we use it when we see something we love. We say it when we are having a great day. It represents everything that is romantic between us.

Ok: What does the future hold?

Yasmine: We have no definitive plans. At the moment ‚m just thoroughly enjoying being Mrs Yasmine Cerrito.

Ok: Thank you for this interview Yasmine.

Yasmine: No, I’ve got to thank, bye...

April 1999

Yasmine Bleeth is not just another babe. Yes, she spent three years squeezing into a tight, red swimsuit on Baywatch, much like the shows other notable alumni, Pamela Anderson Lee, Carmen Electra and Gina Lee Nolin. And, yes, like those actresses, Bleeth left the show to pursue meatier acting assignments. Difference is, while Lee and Electra are still struggling to shed the dreaded bimbo image that comes from launching ones career as a bouncing, beach-bound Barbie doll, Bleeth has taken peoples misconceptions about her intelligence and talent and left them back at the beach-where they belong.
Not to say that its been easy. The second coming of Yasmine Bleeth is a battle being waged on several fronts. Since Baywatch, Bleeth has earned consistently positive critical notices for a range of made-for-TV movies. Last fall, she landed the role of a saucy investigator who butts heads with Don Johnsons title character on CBS Friday night hit, Nash Bridges. And then, of course, there are her talk-show appearances. From Conan OBrien to David Letterman to Politically Incorrect, Bleeths quick wit and self-effacing style have earned her a reputation as one of the most sought-after guests on late-night TV Not exactly fodder for the bimbo bargain bin, eh?
Bleeths honesty, smarts and obvious charm are apparent even over the phone. Celebrity Style caught up with her at her hotel room while on a mini-vacation in Canada. Her willingness to tackle nearly any topic-from love to strip clubs to feminism-is remarkable indeed. She even conducted the interview while still in bed with boyfriendactor Richard Grieco. Oh my!
Bleeth doesnt shy away from discussing the fact that some people still try to write her off as a mere mannequin, valued for her looks and not much else. "People are surprised to find out that I can speak and put two sentences together, that Im smart and literate," she laughs. "Why would they assume that I wouldnt be?"
Perhaps its because despite having begun her career with an impressive seven years of work on daytime soaps such a Ryans Hope and One Life To Live, most Americans first discovered Bleeth on Baywatch. Still, she wont apologize for her work on a show that didnt exactly stretch the boundaries of her acting craft, even if it did get her stereotyped. "I look at [the stereotype] and wonder, Is it because Im an actress? Is it because Im a woman? Or is it because I was doing a show where I was perceived as a sex symbol, whatever that means?"
Almost sounds like a feminist philosophy, no? Bleeth pauses for a moment. "Would I consider myself a feminist?" she asks. "Does being a feminist mean that I believe that Im as good as any man and I should be as good as any man? Yes. Do I believe that men and women have certain roles? Yes, I believe in that, too. Most feminists probably wouldnt say that."
And most hard-core feminists probably wouldnt want to hang out at strip clubs. Nor would they appreciate the humor of shock jock Howard Stern. Dont count Bleeth among their ranks. Thats right. If Bleeth could be invisible for a day, shed lounge around strip clubs-yes, strip clubs- and soak up all the atmosphere. "Im just very interested in the whole idea and why men are so interested in it," she explains. "Whats the fascination? Whats so sexy about it?"
As for Stern, when his name comes up, Bleeth laughs and admits shes a fan. She also says shes bewildered by the many celebrities who agree to appear on Sterns show, then are offended when theyre asked to tackle taboo topics. "These people go on the show and are insulted and freaked out when hes asking them about their sexual escapades and whether theyve had fantasies about their brother," chuckles Bleeth. "Thats just what he does. Its a joke!"
Still, while Bleeth has no trouble shifting gears from brainy to bawdy, shes also not immune to a little old-fashioned romance, either. Grieco- Bleeths main man for almost three years now-is "very romantic," she admits. In fact, early in their relationship, Grieco flew to the set of a film where Bleeth was working and gave her a bouquet of freshly picked roses from his garden. "He could have sent flowers or bought them, but he flew across the country with these flowers wrapped in paper towels. More than any of the expensive gifts hes given me, thats what I really cherish," she says.
This is clearly a couple in love. At one point during the interview, Bleeth takes a quick pause. Theres some soft chatting in the background, then she returns to the phone. "Sorry," she apologizes. "Thats my boyfriend. He just had to give me a kiss." Yet while the couples passion keeps burning brightly, dont expect wedding bells any time soon. Bleeth says shes happy with the relationship the way it is. "Is marriage something thats a necessity for me right now? Do I spend time thinking about it? Would I feel more loved? No."

Ironically, when Bleeth met Grieco while filming the quickly forgotten flick Heaven Or Vegas, she thought they were destined to be just friends. "On the surface, Richard is somebody who I never would have gone out with," says Bleeth. "But in the end, the qualities that you need most are not the most obvious. They dont come out right away." Such as? "Someone with a kind heart, whos respectful of family, who makes me laugh. Richard is a guys guy. People might think hes macho and all that stuff, but something about that works for me."
Actually, Bleeth doesnt want her boyfriend to double in the role of best friend. And while Grieco isnt the most sensitive guy shes dated, she says he understands what she needs. "Guys know immediately that Im high maintenance," Bleeth says. "Not monetarily speaking. But if a guy is going to be with me, its going to take some time and effort and thought."
Of course, if the love affair with Grieco ever falters, might we suggest an alternate beau for Bleeth? She noticeably perks up when the conversation turns to host Conan OBrien. "I have the best chemistry with Conan," she says "He just makes me laugh and we have great timing together. I think I can set him up well for the joke, whether I mean to or not." But what does she really think of him? Slightly embarrassed, she admits she finds him "charming" and "sexy." Hmmm…
In any event, whether Bleeth chooses to settle down anytime soon, shes certainly looking at life more philosophically these days, something she attributes to her 30th birthday last year.
One might expect that Bleeth wouldve dreaded reaching the big 3-0, but thats not the case. "I really was looking forward to it. I like being a woman and getting older. And Im not just saying that," she insists. "Before, I would just sort of let things happen and never really think about them. Lately, Ill go, Hey, wait a minute-why was this like this. Why did I make this decision? Why did this relationship end? You have to think about what youve learned and what youre doing right now."
Examining her life and career helped Bleeth come to the decision to leave Baywatch two years ago, even if it meant tempting the fates-which can be unkind to actors who make early exits from hit TV series. (Think David Carusos career, post-NYPD Blue. Eek.)
But even though she was abandoning Baywatch, Bleeth was not opposed to the idea of returning to series television. She just wanted to find the right role, hopeftilly something that played to her comedic strengths. She thought shed hit the jackpot last summer when she found out she was one of four actresses in the running for the lead role in a new NBC series, Will & Grace, which became one of that networks most promising freshman shows. Instead, the role went to Deborah Messing. Bleeth says she was deeply disappointed.
Not long after, however, she got a call from her agent offering her a shot to join the cast of Nash Bridges, playing the role of Caitlin Cross, a tough internal affairs investigator. "It was very flattering that CBS was interested in me," says Bleeth. "It was really strange to get a job before meeting anybody involved. They had done the research on me and watched my tapes. I hadnt even auditioned."
Series star Don Johnson invited her to lunch the day before her first scenes were shot. Her first impression of Mr. Miami Vice? "I wasnt nervous per se, but then again, youre meeting an icon. He was very sweet and charming and straightforward. He had really done his homework on the Caitlin character and thought her out. It really made me feel confident that they [the producers] didnt just hire me because I was some girl from Baywatch with a cute body."
Bleeth calls her Bridges character "strong, ballsy, aggressive and smart," which is exactly the kind of role she wanted to play. "At the same time, Caitlin is very feminine, too, and I really liked that combination. I think thats why she gets away with her behaviour. The character uses her feminine wiles and at the same time shes charming."
Finding complex, well-developed roles for women is "absolutely" a challenge, Bleeth contends, "especially when youre joining a show thats typically male-dominated." For example, Nash Bridges had featured some female characters prior to Bleeths, but none had panned out. "They were relegated to the background, for exposition stuff," Bleeth says. "I didnt want to play some girl who was going to jump into bed with Dons character. I didnt see how people would be interested in seeing that for more than a few episodes."
Indeed, says Bleeth, her Nash Bridges character provides a far greater acting challenge than she faced on Baywatch, not that its any big surprise.
"Baywatch was great fun," she says. "But I had been on soaps for seven years before that, while for most of the cast, Baywatch was their first job. I didnt learn much." On the other hand, Bleeth finds herself surrounded by veteran actors on Bridges. "I feel Im really learning from them and have to step up to the plate," she says.
So whats next for Bleeth? Which of her contemporaries does she most admire? Jennifer Jason Leigh, Susan Sarandon, Meryl Streep and Vanessa Redgrave are just a few of Bleeths favorites on todays movie screens. "I just saw Gwyneth Paltrow in Shakespeare In Love," she adds. "She was just amazing. And Im a big Julia Roberts fan, too."
As for celebrity fashion, Bleeth points to Cameron Diaz, Gwyneth Paltrow and Salma Hayek as having the best personal style. And she admits shed sashay down the catwalk for designer Badgley Mishka if asked.

Part of looking good, Bleeth says, is knowing what clothes flatter ones own figure. She tends toward a more classic look-tailored and fitted clothing. "I would have loved to have lived during the 40s or 50s," she says, when Hollywood was all about glamour.
Indeed, Bleeth has a special appreciation for some of the legendary screen actresses of this century. Though she refuses to compare herself to any of them, she doesnt hesitate to point out their enviable qualities: "Id love to have Katherine Hepburns coolness and sophistication. Marilyn Monroes sexy, sweet-young-thing appeal. And it wouldnt be bad to look like a cross between Rita Hayworth and Elizabeth Taylor either!"
Bleeth, however, really doesnt have anything to worry about when it comes to looks. Her exotic appeal is a result of her Russian/German heritage, and at least some of her beauty comes from her mother, who once worked as a model.
Still, dont expect any vanity from Bleeth. She says she thinks her best feature is that shes comfortable in her own skin. "Its not about being perfect-whether Im heavier or skinnier or havent had sleep the night before," she says. In fact, Bleeth adds, "Im the kind of person who waits until Ive gained ten pounds to start exercising." And if she were challenged to gain 20 pounds for a role, she says shed do it without hesitation.Which brings us to an amusing anecdote from Bleeths past. A few years back, it seems, a supermarket tabloid ran a story on "Yasmines Love Diet," which Bleeth says is the most ridiculous thing shes ever read about herself. "They wrote that Id gained 30 pounds over the summer and lost it in a week because I was dating three guys at once!" she recalls.
Yasmine Bleeth sees her future much differently: 20 years from now, Bleeth envisions shell be "filming one good movie a year and running a beautiful bed and breakfast with my family, someplace in Napa Valley, CA." She laughs to herself, then adds: "Oh! And doing it as well as Martha Stewart."

Yasmines wise guy rules
Since the Baywatch beauty has had relationships with some of the hottest heartthrobs - Luke Perry, Grant Show and Ricky Paull Goldin - we asked Yasmine to give us The Rules she loves by:
Dont let them know youre smarter than they are.
"This is important. Ive had relationships where Ive said, Dont even talk to me about this. I know so much more than you know. And that didnt work. Guys cant handle that."
Let the man be the man.
"It sounds old-fashioned, but you should be woman enough to do this. Men have more head trips than woman. If it makes them feel good to make the decision about where to have dinner, just let them. Who cares?"
Learn how to cook.
"I really believe this is a way to a mans heart. Anyone whos ever fallen in love with me (can attest to this). A man once said to me. The way you served the butter-you made little balls out of butter. I couldnt get over that."
Never come between a guy and his mother.
"This is crucial. Ive done this and it proved disastrous. I was in a relationship where I felt the guy was throwing too much attention to his mother, and I got jealous. What I shouldve taken under consideration is that if a guy treats his mother great, chances are hell treat you great too."
Baywatch star Yasmine Bleeth tells why getting off the beach

June 1997
With her last full season of Baywatch behind her, Yasmine Bleeth readily admires that life on the hit TV series wasnt always a day at the beach. Problems sometimes arise when youre dealing with a cute, but uppity co-star. (No, not Pamela Lee.) It seems hunky David Chokachi continually gave Yasmine grief. "We were always try to one-up each other," explains Yasmine, laughing. "I remember the first year he was on the show, I told some talk show that he actually had his armpit hair trimmed in the makeup trailer. And he said on the Oprah Winfrey show that he was sponsored by PowerBar and that I was sponsored by Hostess Twinkies!" But the worst showdown occurred "one day when he found a dead rat on the beach and chased me around with it. Ive never run so fast in my life," she says.
Such clowning around with cast members is what shell miss most, says Yasmine, who is leaving Baywatch after three seasons as Caroline Holden and will only return for five guest-star appearances next season. "Id like to pursue other jobs-and have a little more free time," she says. Yasmines latest endeavor is a line of swimsuits called Yazwear, which is sold only exclusively through the Newport News mail order catalog (1-800-688-2830)."Thanks to Baywatch," she says, "it seemed apprapo that I do a swimwear line." Besides, she was frustrated by prices of good suits in the stores. "Were offering high-quality one-peace and two-peace swimsuits all priced under $32."
Selling swimsuits maybe a breeze for Yasmine, but does she ever have trouble selling herself as more than just a babe at the beach? "I do try and dispel any preconceived notions that I might not be able to form a sentence just because Im on Baywatch. If I go to a party where I know no one, I feel like people assume that Im snotty or maybe Ive nothing to say because of the way I look. That makes me uncomfortable..."
But Hollywood had already taken notice of Yasmines looks before she could even hold up a mirror. Her career kicked off when she was 6 months old with a two-year contract doing commercials for Johnson & Johnsons baby shampoo. And Yasmines roles on popular daytime soaps, Ryan Fenelli on Ryans Hope (at age 16), and Lee Anne Demerest on One Life to Live (at 22) kept her, thankfully, she says from ever having to work a job outside of show business.
Manhattan born-and-bred Yasmine will soon make her feature film debut in Heaven or Vegas (scheduled for release in late 1997 or early 1998), in which she plays a rebellious Mormon woman who gets involved with prostitution until she is saved by a Prince Charming, who is played by Richard Grieco.
What about a real life Prince Charming? Yasmine had planned to marry Ricky Paull Goldin (a former Another World soap star) in 1995, but the marriage was called off at the last minute (for reasons unsaid) and the relationship ended. All Yasmine, who turns 29 on June 14, wants to say about the subject is that its "unfortunate" that things didnt work out.
However marriage is definitely a part of her future plans. "A career doesnt keep you satisfied forever," she says. "I want a mate and a best friend for life" Shes currently dating someone (she wont name names) who she describes as "very passionate, very volatile. Hes the man I shouldve dated when I was 18-The wild guy on the motorcycle. Im having a lot of fun."
What qualities does her ideal man possess? "Confidence without arrogance and ambition without being completely power-hungry," says Yasmine. But the most valuable trait in any man is a good sense of humor. And she practices what she preaches. "Im a really goofy," she says, "and keeping myself happy is priority number one." So how does she accomplish it? "By talking to my friends and family, having a good laugh and cry when I need it..and keeping things in perspective. If Im feeling mighty, I look at the bad things that have happened to me, and if Im feeling down, I look at how fortunate I am."

She has her niche and I have mine, --Baywatch babe Yasmine Bleeth speaking on Friday, without a trace of jealousy, on her mega-co-star Pamela Anderson Lee. No wonder Bleeth isnt concerned, her niche seems to be widening considerably. Not only was she voted one of People magazines "50 Most Beautiful Faces of 1995," but she was recently featured as the object of Joey and Chandlers affections on Friends.

Yasmine Bleeth
Star of Baywatch

Judging from your comments and questions, you didnt need People magazine to tell you that Yasmine Bleeth is one of the worlds 50 most beautiful people. Bleeth, the stunning brunette who struts her stuff each week on the hugely--and internationally--popular Baywatch, is certainly a favorite with E! Onliners.
But Bleeth is spending less and less time in her skimpy red one-piece these days. Shes chosen not to renew herBaywatch contract: Shell only make guest appearances. Instead, shes busy with TV movies and CD-ROMs, and she just completed filming a starring role in the feature film Heaven or Vegas. Does this mean weve seen the absolute last of Yasmine running on the sunny shores of the Pacific? Well let her answer that.
Here, in the cyberflesh, is that other Baywatch babe to take on all of your questions--but, sorry, not all of your proposals...
How old are you, and where are you from?
Im 28 years young, and Im from New York City.
Is your lovely name your real name?
I love my name, too, and its been Yasmine since day one. I wouldnt change it for the world!
Which person on Baywatch do you enjoy working with most?
David Hasselhoff--what a professional.
If you had to go out with one of the guys from Baywatch, who would it be?
The guys on Baywatch are like brothers to me. I dont think of them as dates, but David Chokachi is a lot of fun to hang out with.
Have you ever dyed your hair blonde or been pressured to in order to get a part?
I admit to having highlighted my hair red--but I never have and never would dye it blonde. Brunettes really do have more fun.
Whats the best and worst thing about being on Baywatch?
The best is hanging out on the beach all day. The worst is the cold, dirty Pacific water.
On Friends, what do you think of Joey and Chandlers obsession with Baywatch? Chandler even put you on his "five celebrities I can sleep with and my mate cant get mad" list. Is this weird for you, or are you flattered?
Im flattered--and it sure doesnt hurt our show, either. [Joey and Chandler] probably speak on behalf of so many men around the world.
Is it true that you are dating Matthew Perry?
Contrary to what the tabloids print, I am not dating Matthew.
Why have you turned down repeated offers to pose for Playboy?
Im not interested in Playboy. Im a fashion maven, and I love people to see me with my clothes on.
What is one of the craziest things you have done in your life?
Once when I was hanging around with friends, I drank a bottle and a half of wine, which is way too much for me. Things definitely got a little crazy, considering I hardly ever drink.
Are you still dating the actor who played Dean Frame on Another World?
I am no longer dating Ricky Paull Goldin, but we remain friends.
How did it feel to be in the video game Maximum Surge?
Maximum Surge was a completely new experience for me. It was great to get tough and gritty. The whole concept of CD-ROM is still mind-blowing to me.
Dont you think David Hasselhoff needs to start picking some more real-looking women?
David is a great guy and a smart boss. How else do you explain the show being the number one international show?
Do you get along with Gena Lee Nolin offscreen? You hate each others guts on Baywatch.
I get along very well with Gena Lee, though we are not best friends. My best friend, Nancy Valen, was cast on Baywatch this season.
Are the producers ever going to rename the show? Id suggest Babewatch.
To my knowledge, there are no plans to rename the show. Though some prefer Babewatch, the truth is, the lifeguards watch the bay.
I am killing myself trying to remember the name of the soap you used to be on.
Please dont kill yourself! I played on Ryans Hope and One Life to Live.
What type of movie would you like to do?
I would like to try my hand at comedy. With soaps and Baywatch, I have a lot of experience with drama and romance. Comedy is something totally different.
When did you first realize your aspirations to become an actress?
I did my first commercial when I was 10 months old, and Ive been in the business ever since.
Have you discovered the incredible world of Internet?
Honestly, Im not that proficient with computers. I usually have somebody help me go online. Theyre fun, because I can interact with my fans.
If you didnt have a job in Los Angeles, where would you prefer working or living?
New York City--Im a born-and-bred city girl.
Your character profile on the Baywatch Website states that "Caroline" has a talent for painting. Is this a hobby you pursue when youre not performing?
Right now, Im redecorating my house, so the only painting Im doing is ceilings, doors and moldings. Ugh!
How many hours a day/week do you work out to keep your beautiful body fit?
A lot!

Friends star Matthew Perry has a new love. The actor, who plays the smart-ass Chandler Bing on the popular series, is currently romancing Baywatch über-babe Yasmine Bleeth. The New York Daily News reports that Perry and Bleeth have been inseparable for the last three weeks, much to the chagrin of actor Richard Grieco, Bleeths former beau. Grieco has been sending his love roses by the hundred, and he even threw in a diamond ring for good measure. Yasmine has certainly had a busy year. In January, she was still engaged to Another Worlds Ricky Paul Goldin, and the two were reportedly planning a big wedding in Ireland at the end of the year. Then she and Grieco became a pair while on the set of Heaven or Vegas (Bleeth plays a prostitute, Grieco a gigolo-- sounds deep). Now shes paired with Perry, who it seems is trying to keep things quiet, apparently hoping to avoid the circus that surrounded his brief but memorable relationship with Julia Roberts.

I originally signed a three-year contract, and Ive fulfilled that contract, so Im not quitting...Im just leaving my options open.-Baywatchs Yasmine Bleeth on why shes packing up the Coppertone and leaving the beach behind. Bleeths hope? Pursuit of a feature film career. Bleeths reality? A starring role in this Sundays ABC TV movie Talk to Me, a behind-the-scenes look at the nasty world of a fictional talk show. Good thing shes brokered a deal to appear on five episodes of Baywatch as a recurring character next season, just in case film stardom is a little slow in coming. (Prodigy/Spotlight)
October 15th, 1996
After three years, "Baywatch" star Yasmine Bleeth (right) has decided to hang up her swimsuit.
The 28 year-old who started acting at the tender age of six months, when she appeared in a TV commercial for Johnsons Baby Shampoo, says that she wont be back for the next season of the worlds most popular TV show as she plans to concentrate on her movie career.
She already has two movies in the can. "Talk to Me," in which she plays a naive talk show producer, is due to air on ABC on Sunday Oct. 20th; and she has also finished "Heaven or Vegas," a movie about a prostitute who wants to leave Las Vegas.

On Baywatch, Yasmine Bleeth is the biggest babe-magnet around (sorry, Pamela). And in real life, she s dated a string of 90210 and Meirose Place hunks. So whats her secret? Read on to find out how she always gets her guy BYCHUCKARNOLD
Baywatch star Yasmine Bleeth may be off-duty, but, once again, shes stuck on the beach.
Except instead of having to work today shes busy working it for her YM cover shoot. And every guy around has his eyes on her-one desperate dude even breaks out his binoculars to get a closer view.
Its no wonder: Yasmine looks every inch the aquagoddess with her sexy new blond streaks and ultra-curvy hod. As further proof of her amazing babemagnet powers, she immediately attracts the two sweetest cuties around. They just happen to be a couple of little blond boys.
"These are future David Chokachis," proclaims Yasmine, after posing for a photo with her adorable fans, who are in such a total state of shock that they cant even open their mouths to introduce themselves to their idol.
Love Lowdown
If anyone can spot a studin-training, its Yasmine. After all, as lifeguard Caroline Holden on Baywatch, shes scoped superhunks like David Chokachi, Jaason Simmons, and David Charvet. And as a daytime soap star, she worked with Christian Slater before he became a Hollywood heartthrob and snagged hotties like Grant Show and Luke Perry.
While shes definitely had her fair share of dates with mega-babes, Yasmine has always held out for true love. No flings for this girl only the real thing.
"I always go out with a guy for a while. Its never a quick sort of deal," says the 27-year-old actress. "Ive really only had five serious boyfriends in my life. When I pick em, I pick em right."
Until recently, Mr. Right was former soap-opera stud Ricky Paull Goldin. Although Yasmine insists@ they havent given up on" their year-and a half engagement, their have been rumors of a breakup since they cancelled their NewYears Eve wedding after the invitations were already in the mail.
Yasmine admits that long-term relationships arent always smoothly sailing, but she says day definitely beat diving back into the dating pool. "I just think its weird sitting across from somebody at dinner on a first date. wondering if youll ever see him again," she says.
To avoid that sinking feeling, Yasmine has always played it serious when it comes to romance. In fact, she was only 16 when she started getting hot-and-heavy with Grant Show. We need details Yasmine, details!
"I saw this gorgeous creation of a man and I was like, Wow!" she gushes. "We played boyfriend and girlfriend on the old soap Ryans Hope, and we were friends for a long time before we started going out in
real life. We were together for about two years and were still friends now."
And what about Luke Perry? (She started dating him before 90210.) Yasmine fidgets in her seat, plays with her hair, and tries to hide in her sweater. Her body language tells us this is one sore subject. All shell reveal is: "We were friends. We knew each other for a while." Emphasis on the past tense.
Romance Rules
Yasmine wont spill any more about her exes, though. She believes that in order to make a new love last, youve got to keep the past in the past. "I hate talking about old boyfriends because it always ends up hurting the guy youre with now. Im sure Grants girlfriend, Laura Leighton, doesnt want to read about me and Grant. And I dont want to read about Ricky and his ex-girlfriends." Thats the kind of cool chick Yasmine is-she doesnt like to step all over other peoples feelings. In fact, when she came aboard Baywatch two years ago, she was careful not to make any waves with the resident diva on duty, Pamela Lee. "I wasnt out for her job; it wasnt like they were going to fire her because they hired me," she says. "Pamelas a very confident girl. Shes really secure with herself and has no reason to feel threatened by me. We get along great-shes very nice."
Baywatch BUZZ
The one thing Pamela has that Yasmine wants is David Chokachi-on the show, that is. "Hopefully, next season Im going to get my claws into David. Ive been knocking on the producers door every day, going,
"Excuse me, Pamela got David last year; I want him this year!"
But dont feel too sorry for her. Yasmine hasnt had any trouble so far puckering up for her kissing scenes with Baywatch babes David Charvet and Jaason Simmons. "I was on the soap operas, where every week we were making out with somebody new," she explains with a laugh.
Believe it or not, despite Yasmines tongue-twisting experience with her buff sand dudes, shes never dated a lifeguard in real life. Heres another surprise: for a girl who runs around all day in a bathing suit, Yasmine is not majorly obsessed with her bod-although she definitely does like to look good.
"Im not a big exercise buff, but about two months before we begin taping for the new season I do start working out pretty heavily", she says.
But when shes not shooting, Yasmine reveals, she usually blows off exercise and lets herself gain a few pounds. "Id probably weigh ten pounds more than I do if I werent in this business, and Id be very happy with myself"
Yasmine has been in show business practically from Day One-she started modeling when she was six months old-but she doesnt feel as if she missed out on anything. In fact, she attended a normal high school in New York City and she even went to her senior prom.
But okay-she did take Grant Show as her date. "We werent boyfriend and girlfriend yet, but we were working together on Ryans Hope. I asked him if hed take me because I wanted to impress the others.“ she recalls. "Ive always had very good taste in guys." As if we couldnt tell.

SINCE SHE WAS SIX MONTHS OLD, YASMINE BLEETH BEEN AT HOME IN FRONT OF THE CAMERA-SHE WAS ORIGINALLY ONE OF THE JOHNSON & JOHNSON AD BABIES. LAST YEAR MS. BLEETH WAS VOTED ONE OF PEOPLE MAGAZINE S 50 MOST BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE. ROLE AS CAROLINE HOLDEN ON BAYWATCH HAS ROCKETED HER TO INTERNATIONAL TELEVISUAL SUPERSTARDOM. Baywatch IS VIEWED EVERY WEEK IN MORE THAN 140 COUNTRIES AND 195 CITIES THROUGHOUT THE U.S.- MAKING IT OVER A BILLION VIEWERS WORLDWIDE. SO YASMINE BLEETH, THE ACTRESS, IS PACED WITH SOME DIFFICULT CHOICES. WHERE DOES ONE GO AFTER THE BIGGEST TV SHOW EVER?
MEN’S PERSPECTIVE: How long have you been a performer?
YASMINE BLEETH: I guess since I was born. I started doing commercials I was six months old. So, it wasnt my choice initially. I was mod- and doing commercials from infancy, and then when I was old Hugh to have my wits about me and make decisions for myself, I decided that I really liked it and I just continued. What was life like as a child star? I dont know if I was a star. I didnt consider myself very different from other people. It was just something I did after school. I went on Rogue shoots, modeled and did commercials, but I didnt think of it as famous or different. I did my first film when I was twelve years old, starring Buddy Hackett. It was a musical-comedy called Hey Babe. They were looking for a newcomer and I got it. I didnt want to do any more movies because I didnt want to miss school. It was weird, that was the first time in my life that I actually missed two or three months of school. at sixteen, I got a soap opera while I was still in high school.
MP: How did your peers treat you when you began to work on Ryans Hoped
YB: It was the first time I sort of got any bit of celebrity. My friends had been my friends for so long by then, I had been in the same school since fifth grade, so everyone knew me, and it was cool. I remember the first day I aired, my friend brought in a television set and we watched it during lunch break. But, then I graduated three months into it, so I didnt really see them much anymore.
MP: Describe a typical day in the making of a show like Ryans Hope.
YB: I would show up to work about seven oclock in the morning, have breakfast, study my lines. You would learn the lines the same day. Just have sittings and makeup. It was actually very leisurely. It saved me from going to college. I never wanted to go to college. I never wanted to go away to a university. So, I lucked out.
MP: How do you deal with being a famous person?
YB: Its not hard to deal with. The perks way outweigh the, you know, problems.
MP: How did your role in Baywatch come about?
YB: I had just finished doing another soap opera called One fife to five in New York. I was on that for about three years. I came out to L.A. to try my luck, and I ended up doing a guest spot on Baywatch. Three months later, they called me up and offered me a contract. I was wary at first. I didnt jump at the chance because I was worried about getting typecast in that kind of a show. But my representatives convinced me that it was a great thing to do-they were right.
MP: Why were you uncertain about doing the show, intially?
YB: Well, because when you get on a show for a long time you can sort of get stereotyped and categorized as, "Oh well, shes a soap actress." Then I wasnt sure if I wanted to come out here and join a television show like Baywatch, a show about pretty women in swim suits. Everyone has aspirations to do things with different kinds of quality. Its not that I dont think Baywatch is a quality show, it is, and it doesnt fancy itself anything that it is not.
MP: At the time that you started doing Baywatch it was an extremely popular show...
YB: Thats what, in the end, convinced me to do it... I said, "Well look, I am going to take this show, I am going to jump on the bandwagon and hopefully I will be able reap some of the benefits of the shows popularity and it will give me other opportunities," which it really has.
MP: Did you think that there would come a point in doing Baywatch where a billion people would be watching you every week?
YB: I cant fathom that. You cant compute that in your brain, a billion people watching a bunch of us run around and save peoples lives. Its hard to understand.
MP: Describe your first meeting with David Hasslehoff.
YB: I met him my first day on the set. I never had to meet him before hand. He was very nice, very welcoming. He seemed very happy to have me on the show. He too started acting in soap operas and he knew that a lot of people who come on the show save for, David and Alexandra Paul, were newcomers. They were in their first jobs, so they were very young and inexperienced as actors. Whereas, I think, he knew that having me on the show, I had been doing this if not all my life, for a good eight years which is great training. I think he knew he had a professional on his hands, that he wouldnt have to worry about me knowing my lines.
MP: Describe what a typical shooting day is like on Baywatch.
YB: Its usually really easy, and its beautiful and we spend the day at the beach. We sit in our trailers until they are ready for us and then we have a wonderful lunch and then we go home. The only days that are a little more grueling is when we do our water work and we have to go in the ocean and that usually involves a lot of psyching yourself up and coating your body with Vaseline to keep warm.
MP: How do you find it different, coming from New York, and now living in Los Angeles?
YB: This whole city revolves around the business. You are either an actor, producer, writer director or technician. If not, you run a magazine thats about entertainment. I think if you can work and live in New York, thats great, more power to you, because what you do is different there, and you meet other people who are not involved in the business and dont adulate it so much, dont put so much emphasis on it. Heresy everything is about the business. So, its hard. But being such, this 44 where you get the work too. I have really adapted to Los Angeles. I loped getting in my car and driving to where I have to go. As everyone says it is culturally barren, but you get what you look for. So, you can looking for things and there are things to do, most people who are from New York do. Do you think everyone goes to museums and the theater and marvels to the architecture every day? They dont.

MP: How do you stay in shape and how do you prepare for the morel physical work on Baywatch?
YB: Im very lucky, I am basically athletic and I am pretty strong. I start training a couple months before we go back every year, and I do my treadmill for an hour a day, three or four days a week, and thats about it. I was always a strong swimmer, Im not Olympic-caliber swimmer, but I am strong and very comfortable in the water. So, it doesnt entail, for me, anyway, any great strenuous exercise or preparation.
MP: You seem very purposeful and, extremely articulate. Baywatch stars dont normally have that kind of reputation.
YB: My reasoning behind Baywatch was I am going to take this, I am going to take this show for what it has and I am going to try at benefit from it. Meaning, I am going to take the exposure and d popularity that it could give me and I am going to show people that I am different, or at least try to. Any publicity that I do or television appearance I make, I try and show who I am-not a stereotypical Baywatch female. I was actually surprised that they wanted me on the show. Because I too had the image of Baywatch as being full of California blondes with limited IQs. I mean, thats what they portrays Thats not who the actors are, of course. In the work that I choose tot do and my other projects, I have completely stayed away from anything that is even close to being a bimbo role, even if it was a funny role.
MP: Do you actively seek film work during the downtime?
YB: This has been my busiest year. On my hiatus, I did three projects. I did two movies for television and one feature. Both movies for television were definite character pieces. My first film that came out was for NBC it was called The Face. I played a physically disfigured woman. That we very interesting to play somebody who was stared at for her physicality, but not in the way that one is used to. Heaven or Vegas is the title of the feature. It is an independent feature by a company called Cineville that I shot in Utah. I play this character called Rachel, and she is off the wall. She is a young girl who grew up a very strict Mormon in Utah, then ran away to rebel against what she saw as hypocrisy in her home to She gets caught up in a life of prostitution in Vegas. Then she meets this high-class fellow and they run off together about her journey. She is a child. She is an innocent even though what she does is not innocent.
MP: Why choose an independent movie instead of maybe something a little bigger?
YB: Well, because I really respect independent film makers. It wasnt a choice to do an independent or a mainstream feature, it was the script that I really liked, and the character. I wasnt interested in any of the mainstream features that I was offered. It was either girlfriend parts or nudity. I wont do nudity in film, I just wont, and so it was sort of that which was completely dull and uninteresting to me. I didnt think I was ready to carry a big, $30 million movie for my first time out. I didnt think I was ready for it, and I wasnt offered a script that I felt would give me the opportunity to do that. Not to mention any names, but we all know one of my co-stars went and did a big budget feature. When I do a role, I only do a role where I say, "You know what, I can be good in this role." I think the best actors portray people that they know. Until I grow and I learn more, which I have a lot to learn, I am going to portray people that I know.
MP: How does working on Baywatch differ from being on a movie?
YB: Baywatch is a real ensemble show, no one person carries the show, so its a lot less pressure. When Im doing a feature, they are my films, meaning, I was the main character, I was the protagonist, I felt I could handle it. I wanted that to be my sort of stepping stone into carrying a piece. With Baywatch, you dont have that responsibility. I like it better, to tell you the truth, because of the momentum-you are building your character every day. You dont have an hour here, an hour there, and it is just fun to be consumed by a character.
MP: How long do you plan to do Baywatch, and do you feel there will : come a point where the upside of possibilities will be outweighed by the downside?
YB: Its already in the horizon. I really think this is going to be my last year. This is my third year, it is going to be my last year as a regular. I think I am going to come back and do a few guest spots. I think it has been wonderful to me. It has given me incredible opportunities and I really appreciate the show and all that it has done and all that it can continue to do, but I think another year would start to make me fall in a different direction. I think what I am trying to do right now is to be "Yasmine Bleeth" as opposed to "Yasmine Bleeth from Baywatch I think if I stay too long, another year, it would turn me into, "Oh, shes the girl from Baywatch."
MP: That it is a tough decision to make. Whats going to tip the balance for you?
YB: I am not going to wait until something happens that is going to make me leave. What I am saying is that I am going to make the decision now whether other offers are forthcoming or not. The fear is still there, the fear is always there, but I am saying I am going to make a decision that this is my last year. I dont have a lead in the next Meryl Streep movie set up for next year already... I might consider doing a sitcom because I really enjoy doing comedy. I love to laugh, so I would love to try and make people laugh. You know, maybe a period film like a Dangerous Lions or a great epic saga.
MP: What personal qualities aside from your skills or craft as an actor do you think have been most responsible for your success?
YB: I think confidence. I think my family and my mother especially, brought me up to be very confident. I think respect for other people. I think being confident, yet being humble. The ability to do everything, the ability to really keep a good head on your shoulders and to be that anything in this business or anything in life is fleeting. Not to take yourself too seriously. Its a real balance, you know. I think of what I do as a job is just as any other job, as if I were selling clothes in a shop or cooking food in a restaurant. I mean, I think of it as a job. It is how I make my living, and I enjoy it and I feel very fortunate to be able to make a living at something I enjoy, because I know a lot of people dont.
MP: Where would you like to see yourself in ten years?
YB: Ten years, what would that make me? Thirty-eight years would definitely keep working. I dont necessarily have to be biggest star on earth. I dont have to be Michelle Pfeiffer or Moore. I love the career of an actress, say like Robin Wright think does wonderful projects, is very talented, is very low-key, and seek fame. It doesnt seem to matter to her, you know. I think Fame is wonderful and it is great to have it, but I dont think I would want it all my life, you know.

Yasmine Bleeth, the brunette beauty of "Baywatch," is in the midst of planning her wedding to actor Ricky Paull Goldin. Im sure many want to know how she stays slim enough to wear a bikini everyday? Bleeth trains hard for about two months before the season starts (excecise is not one of her favorite things) and she tries to stick to four small meals a day.

"I was a huge Jeopardy fan for years. In fact, up until a few years ago, I used to put on my answering machine every night at 7:00 p.m. I wouldnt pick up the phone while it was on! So I was very excited on being a guest."
"Actually Id like credit for coming up with "Celebrity" Jeopardy. About eight years ago, when I was on Ryans Hope, I was at a party with Alex Trebek. I went up to him, told him what a big fan I was and said: You should do a soap opera day and have all the soap stars on. And he just said, Oh, thats very interesting... I reminded him about our conversation when we taped the show and he said something about vaguely remember my idea."
"But seriously, doing the show was fun. I got into the competition. I didnt win, but I put a valiant fight. I play with Jeff Foxworthy and Thomas Haden-Church. They were both very funny and we had some good laughs. But when it came to the show they were a lot more serious than I was. I was the comedian when we were actually playing! My charity was Sloan Kettering Breast Cancer Research because my mom died of breast cancer."
Tattoo Taboo
 Baywatch is turning into Weddingwatch. First, Yasmine Bleeth got engaged last January to actor Ricky Paull Goldin (who last starred in Broadways Grease). Then Pamela Anderson met and married rocker Tommy Lee in a beachside ceremony Feb. 19 in Cancun, Mexico. "Maybe its a hormonal thing," says Bleeth, 26. "Women who work together kind of get married and engaged at the same time. Maybe we could have a communal [wedding] shower." But Bleeth, who will wed Goldin early next year in New York City, wont follow Andersons lead and wear a bikini when she says her vows. "Were going to be clothed, due to weather," she says. And one more thing: Bleeth wont let her beloved get under her skin by having his name tattooed on her ring finger, as Anderson and Lee did, or anywhere else. "I break out in a cold sweat just thinking about needles," she says. "I cant even get a booster shot."
BLEETH SPIRIT
SURGEPROTECTOR: The actress is game
Fehler! Textmarke nicht definiert.

Never known for rushing anywhere, Hollywoods acting corps has been reluctant to set up a beachhead on the burgeoning cyberstage. Still, a brave few have embraced the unknown, including Baywatchs brunet Yasmine Bleeth, who plays a postapocalyptic bounty hunter in Maximum Surge, a CD-ROM game due in March from Digital Pictures. Here, the 27-year-old actress offers a peek into the nascent world of interactive acting.
 How did this project differ from film and TV?
You do one scene four or five different times with just slight differences. It gets a little monotonous, to tell the truth. [Live-action CD-ROMs] are still relatively new, and the scripts arent really geared toward actors yet. Its still predominantly a game.
 What was the biggest lesson you learned?
Oh, God, a lot of patience. Its just so technical. As an actor youre used to being the focus of attention. In this, the actor is on the third rung of the ladder. First, its the time allotted for the scene. Second, its whats going on in the game, and then maybe the actor and the dialogue.
 How do you think multimedia and the digital revolution will affect Hollywood?
Thats why I wanted to do it, to get in when it was first starting. Ive heard all sorts of rumors, that with every big feature theyre going to make a CD-ROM. Its either going to be the wave of the future or just the flavor of the month.
 Whats the buzz on CD-ROM work in acting circles?
Everybody says to me, and the articles Ive read say, that most actors who do CD-ROMs are sort of--how do you put this delicately? For example, Walter Koenig did my CD-ROM too. They say a lot of the actors were famous but arent working as much now. I dont know if theres a stigma attached to it. Tia Carrere did one. I cant imagine that a real Hollywooder would be excited about it, because I dont think its geared toward actors yet.

Baywatch beauty Yasmine Bleeth practiced birth control during her romantic holiday to the Emerald Isle with Irish-born fiancee Ricky Paul Goldin. My eyewitness says the leggy lassie refused to get near an ancient fertility stone that childless women rub to get preggers. Guess Yasmine doesnt want any baby fat ruining her eyepoppin figure.

According to actress Yasmine Bleeth, the gorgeous girls of "Baywatch" have some sexy secrets. "We wear unlined suits to sure they cling to all our curves," says Yasmine. "The girls apply ice to their breasts before filming key scenes to ensure they look perky; swim suits are especially made and cut higher than normal; everyone was tan make-up and sucks in their tummies." So, thats how they look so hot?

The City Girl Goes A Little Bit Country

A native New Yorker, Yasmine moved to the West Coast for the first time when she joined the Baywatch cast. "Its been great," professes Yasmine. "L.As been beautiful. I have to admit I had an East Coast snobbism about me. I thought, Oh L.A. is going to be so rural. But I actually really enjoy it just as much as I enjoy New York." But how did she settle in in this new environment? "I was very lucky to have had good friends out here who had migrated from the east a few years ago, so that made the transition easier," adds Yasmine. She does, however, admit that going from a high-rise apartment building to a house takes some getting used to. "Im so used to having a doorman and going up in an elevator. Houses scare me... Im constantly checking the windows of the house we live in," she chuckles.
The other half of that "we" is actor-producer Ricky Paull Goldin, Yasmines fiancee. The couple met while co-starring in the play Welcome to My Life and have been together for over three years. Goldin, whose acting credits include the daytime serial Another World, recently finished a year-long stint in the Broadway musical Grease where he played Danny Zucco, the role John Travolta made famous in the movie version.
Her beauty didnt always lead to popularity: "When I was little, I used to have to force the boys to kiss me. I had to get my toughest friends to hold them down." And in high school, she adds, "girls were always threatening to beat me up because they thought I flipped my hair too much."
Now 26 and Baywatchs newest lifeguard, she brings a flirty vulnerability to the show. "Shes no beach bunny," sums up costar Jaason Simmons. "Shes exotic and classy. Her eyes are outstanding - a brilliant pale blue. Theyre filled with energy and mischief."
In the past those eyes hypnotized boyfriends Luke Perry and Grant Show, but Bleeth finally met her match in Ricky they became engaged in January. "He says he can spend the rest of his life looking at this face," Bleeth says with a sigh.
Most people wouldnt turn away from her 55", 117-lb. hourglass figure either, but Bleeth would rather be 511". "Tall, skinny women can get breast implants, and they become perfect," she says teasingly. "But women who are small and curvy cant get leg extensions. That isnt fair."

Thanks to Sleepy

Everybody should have a daughter like Yasmine Bleeth. She’s bright, beautiful, well-mannered ("except once, when I was six, I went up to this photographer...I go up to him and I go to his nose and I say: ‘You know something, your nose is really big!’ My mother reminded me of that; I was so embarrassed!"), level-headed. She does her homework, goes to bed when she’s supposed to, does her own laundry. And she makes a lot of money.

I took this early photograph of Yasmine when she was seven; she’s twelve now and has been modeling since she was six and a half months old. Nowadays, she’s doing less print, more commercials. She has done a children’s jeans commercial for Gloria Vanderbilt: "It was fun, but I don’t like the idea of wearing other people’s names on your pants. In middle one - that’s what we calls sixth grade (Yasmine attends the UN School, a bilingual private school in New York) - designer jeans were In, and everyone wore them. So I did too." But from the sobering heights of the eight grade, "when you can get a pair of Levi’s for fourteen dollars, and then you hear forty dollars for a designer jeans - !"

Yasmine likes modeling - for the moment. It hasn’t interfered with her schoolwork. ("I’m not the most outstanding student in the entire world; average for me is usually good, or sometimes very good. Every once in a while, I’ll get an excellent"), and it hasn’t cost her friends ("They don’t treat me like Miss Goddess; I’m just another friend. It’s like some people take ballet or play the violin; modeling is just another thing that I can do"). But she doesn’t plan on doing it forever. "I have no intention of being a model when I grow up. I just don’t think you need anything to be a model except good looks and being able to pose. You don’t have to have any intelligence. You don’t have to study anything in college. I’m looking forward to go to college. I want to go to Colorado, Or Princeton, Or Yale, maybe. I want to be a doctor, Or an interior decorator...There are just so many things!"

There’s also acting. Yasmine has made a movie, Babe, in which she plays a little girl, an orphan, who fantasizes that she is a star. Yasmine is the star. Buddy Hackelt is de co-star. "He was fun to work with. He taught me a lot about saying lines...how you should move your eyes in a certain way...I’d never seen myself on a big screen before. It was like, Oh my God! My voice sounded different Everything was different, but I guess it was all right. Still I don’t want to be an actress when I grow up, but it’s sort of an interest now...maybe I will be...."

She has her junior Lifesaver’s card in swimming, her own roller skates, a white Maltese terrier named Frankie-O ("because most people name little fragile dogs Champagne or Snowball") almost all the Beatles’ records, and no dresses - except one, for summer. She likes books about girls her own age and books by Judy Blume. But only the one she wrote for children. "She wrote two adult books, which are very disgusting. The story was good, but every other page was, like, Oh my God! - instead of just saying ‘They did this and they did that’, she describes everything, and you know, it’s not bringing anything to the book."

The facts of life didn’t come to Yasmine via the Book-of-the-Month Club. "My mother told me...and around school...the streets. But my mom never hid anything for me." There is a further reason for her sophistication; Having lived for a while in Brazil, where she skipped a full year in school. She is now by far the youngest child in the class. "All her friends," her mother, Carina, told me, "are older, and I am astonished by the conversations they have; about boys...sex. They make fun, they make a joke out of it. But there is an awareness. They are aware of homosexuality; they accepted it. There is nothing they don’t know."

Sexual converstion used to be more intense. "Mostly, we used to talk about boys, and it was like, ‘Oh, I’m so in love with him. Ohhhh!’ We don’t talk about it so much anymore...actually, we got over that last year." A typical date is five girls and five boys on roller skates, although "I’ve gone out once to a movie at night. Afterwards we went to an ice-cream parlor. And then we just went home. It wasn’t like, And then he dropped me off and kissed good night. Nothing like that; it’s not serious. Also, we paid our own way."

Yasmine gets an allowance of $6 a week: "three dollars from my mom and three dollars from my dad." That her parents are separated troubles her less than the tension of their living together. "That bothered me. It would be nice if they could live together, but I understand that they have problems. So I’d rather they live this way. Besides they only live a block away from each other. And they’re friends; They go away together in the weekends....I see my dad three or four times a week, and I sleep over at least twice. Usually I tell both of my parents everything, but I tell my father everything...sometimes things I don’t tell my mom."

She has a close, easygoing relationship with her mother. Still, Carina is the in-charge parent. "She doesn’t tell me, Brush your teeth, wash your hands before dinner, do this, do that. But she, you know, takes care of me. I have to be home after school no later than five, because of my homework. And sometimes she’s not home, so I would get home about five thirty or a quarter to six...There’s a sort of hangout for the kids after school. We all stay there. I did a couple of times, but I don’t anymore, because my mom calls home at five o’ clock. And if I’m not home, she knows. One day, she goes, ‘Were you home on time?’ And I go, ‘Yes.’ And then she gets really mad at me...I don’t usually lie to her."

What worries Carina a great deal more than homework is drugs. "My biggest concern is that someone will hand her something when she goes out from school. And that is the only thing I’m really afraid of for her: drugs" Yasmine says, "It goes around the older grades, and it went around the sixth and seventh grade this year. I don’t do it at all. There’s no point to doing it. Most of the people who are doing drugs just doing it because they think that they’re being really cool. If they were they wouldn’t be doing it. That’s how I feel." Pretty cool for a twelve-year-old - that’s how I feel.
